Update: The Highway is now open after nearly 8 hours. No official word on details except officer involved shooting and exploding ammunition and aerosol cans.
The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed Highway 101 between Reedsport and Winchester to assist law enforcement agencies with an incident that involves a vehicle fire. The road has been closed since about 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23.
Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Douglas County Major Crimes Team are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Highway 101 near milepost 215, about 2 miles south of Reedsport near Winchester Bay.
A vehicle fire there involved a number of small explosions, and officers have requested the OSP explosives unit respond to make the scene safe.
The highway is currently blocked and travelers in the area are asked to use alternate routes. ODOT has issued no estimated time for road clearance. Investigators expect an extended delay before reopening the highway.
The officer involved was not injured. The suspect in the shooting incident was transported by ambulance with critical injuries.
ODOT also reports traffic delays 10 to 12 miles north of Florence on Highway 101, which is undergoing slide repairs. ODOT crews also are doing maintenance work on Highway 126 east of Florence and Highway 38 east of Reedsport.
