Rest in Peace Walter P. McCain Jr.

Walter P. McCain Jr. Oct. 11, 1938 – Dec. 17, 2014

A viewing will be held for Walter P. McClain Jr.,76, of Reedsport from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Dunes Memorial Chapel, 2300 Frontage Road, Reedsport. A service will follow at the chapel. Burial will take place at Reedsport Masonic Cemetary.

Walter was born Oct. 11, 1938, to Walter P. McClain Sr. and Clara M. Bauer in Turtle Lake, Wisc. He was raised in Cumberland, Wisc., graduating from Cumberland High School in 1956.

Walter worked at International Paper as the powerhouse operator and electric ops for 29 years, retiring in 1993.

He traveled with his sister, Clarita, and brother-in-law, Gordon to Alaska, around all of the U.S., twice and he spent many winters in Arizona. He enjoyed camping, especially the yearly campouts with his many nephews, nieces and siblings at various lakes in Oregon. When he was younger he also enjoyed fishing and crabbing.

He served for four and a half years in the U.S. Navy before being honorably discharged. He served on the USS Lexington as an aviation electronics tech, second-class petty officer. He was a member of the BPO Elks.

Walter is survived by his sisters, Clarita Rexford of Sutherlin and Anita Sams of Madras; brothers, Stanley Prochaska of Fairfax, Va., John “Jack” Bowers of Reedsport, Gary Bowers of Reedsport, Larry Bowers of Polson, Mont., and Roger Bowers of Ft. Mohava, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1940; mother in 1999; and his dad, Howard Bowers in 1995.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Special Olympics or charity of choice.
